Digital skills are now part of everyday life, but not everyone has the same access, experience or confidence to use them.
Our Croydon Digital Inclusion Programme was set up to change that. Working with communities across Croydon, we helped people develop practical digital skills, build their confidence and become more comfortable doing things online for themselves.
For some people, the first step was getting access to the right technology. For others, it was having someone there to explain things, answer questions and give them time to practise without feeling rushed.
The programme brought that support together through face-to-face learning, guided digital pathways and practical help from people who understood the different barriers our participants faced.
What We Achieved
561 people signed up
500 people actively took part
More than 200 people completed their learning pathways and received an Android tablet to help them continue using the skills they had learned.
Those numbers matter, but what mattered most was what people could do afterwards.
Participants finished the programme with greater confidence using technology, more experience of doing things online for themselves and a device they could continue learning with at home.
It Was About More Than Technology
Digital inclusion isn't just about giving someone a tablet or showing them how to get online. It's about helping someone feel confident enough to have a go for themselves.
That takes time, patience and the opportunity to practise. Our participants could ask questions, learn at their own pace and get support when they needed it.
As their skills developed, so did their confidence. That was one of the most important things we wanted the programme to achieve.
What Happens Next
This funded phase of the Croydon Digital Inclusion Programme has now finished.
What we learned from the programme continues to shape our digital inclusion work and how we support people who may otherwise be left behind.
