Getting Active Programme

Getting Active Programme Overview

The Getting Active Programme is a community-driven initiative designed to provide young people in London with free access to sports, movement, and physical activity. Delivered in partnership with grassroots youth and community organisations, the programme targets inactive and less active youth, as well as those facing barriers to participation.

By integrating structured sports activities with health and well-being benefits, the programme aims to:

  • Improve physical fitness and overall health.

  • Build confidence and personal skills.

  • Reduce isolation by fostering social connections.

  • Provide structured, engaging opportunities for young people.

Football as a Core Activity

Football plays a central role in the programme, acting as a universal connector that engages young people of all backgrounds. Local youth have expressed a strong interest in organised football activities, citing benefits such as:

  • A sense of belonging and teamwork.

  • An outlet for stress relief and emotional regulation.

  • Opportunities to develop leadership, communication, and resilience.

Without these structured activities, young people risk disengagement and inactivity, which can negatively impact their health and overall well-being. By offering accessible football sessions, the programme addresses these concerns directly.

Programme Structure

The Getting Active Programme is built around three key components:

  1. Football Skills Training

    • Focus on technical skills, ball control, passing, shooting, and game tactics.

    • Designed to enhance individual abilities and overall team performance.

  2. Personal Development Workshops

    • Cover topics such as leadership, teamwork, communication, and mental resilience.

    • Help young people develop essential life skills beyond football.

  3. Friendly Matches & Tournaments

    • Provide real-game experience in a competitive but supportive environment.

    • Foster sportsmanship and camaraderie among participants.

Tailored Support & Mentorship

Recognising that each young person faces unique challenges, the programme includes:

  • Weekly online check-ins to understand individual strengths and areas for improvement.

  • Goal-setting support to help participants challenge old ways of thinking.

  • One-on-one mentoring to provide guidance and encouragement.

Programme Schedule & Vision

  • Sessions run three times a week to ensure regular engagement.

  • Each session lasts 90 minutes, providing a mix of training, development, and match play.

  • The programme is designed as a long-term initiative, allowing participants to grow and develop over time.

Impact & Community Benefits

Being part of the Getting Active Programme will bring lasting benefits, including:

  1. Better physical health and reduced health risks.

  2. Increased confidence in young participants.

  3. Stronger social skills and meaningful friendships.

  4. Positive lifelong habits in physical activity.
