Walking Football

What is Walking Football?
Walking Football has some characteristics in common with traditional association football, yet it possesses several key differences that set it apart. The most notable difference is the strict prohibition on running, which also includes jogging; players must maintain a walking pace at all times. They are free to walk as quickly as they like, provided that at least one foot remains on the ground during the entire game.
This unique sport was established in 2011 by John Croot, aiming to create a safe and enjoyable activity for older adults. The rules are intentionally straightforward and tailored to this demographic, prioritising health and safety. For instance, tackling is permitted only without any physical contact, all free kicks are indirect, and the ball is not allowed to rise above head height. Matches typically take place on smaller pitches with reduced goal sizes, and teams usually consist of six players. Walking Football can be played indoors, on artificial turf, or on natural grass fields.
Walking Football offers a fantastic opportunity to maintain fitness and overall health. Research indicates that it can be beneficial in managing mild to moderate hypertension, while also promoting significant aerobic activity that enhances fat oxidation and boosts aerobic capacity.
One of the key advantages of this sport is that participants experience these health benefits while having fun, which encourages them to engage in physical activity rather than viewing it as a tedious task. Our Thursday evening group at Merky FC have been reaping the rewards of the game, not only through the physical activity but also by connecting with new friends, enjoying the outdoors, and revitalising their spirits.
The social aspect of Walking Football adds another layer of enjoyment, making it a holistic approach to fitness. Participants look forward to each session, knowing they will not only improve their health but also create lasting memories with others who share their enthusiasm for the game. This combination of exercise and camaraderie truly enhances the overall experience, making it a rewarding pursuit for everyone involved.
